It didn't happen overnight
for either of them,
Sometimes they laid side
by side without speaking at all.
Often they only pretended
to be asleep,
Using silence as an
unmovable wall.
Gradually, the darkness
of night gave way to the daytime,
Hours were spent working
so hard there was no time to think.
Two people, living in
the same house without passion,
Both of them knowing
their life together had started to sink.
For awhile they both
pondered what had gone wrong,
They both tried to find
ways to make it right.
Slowly, they gave up on
pleasing each other,
She walked out on a dark,
cold, winter night.
She found love and
comfort in another,
He looked for someone to
warm her spot in his bed.
They moved forward with
new lives filled with laughter,
Thoughts of each other
still lived in their heads.
If only love had been
enough to see them through,
If only harsh words
had never been spoken.
Maybe their lives
would have been different,
The gold bands they
had worn would have been more than just tokens.
It didn't happen

It took months,
maybe years, for their love to fade away.
The second time
around they took nothing for granted,
